Treatment Consent & Safety

Aesthetic treatments are medical procedures, and you deserve to understand one fully before you agree to it. This page explains what we will discuss at your consultation, what we need to know about you, and what to expect, so that nothing on the day is a surprise.

Why consent matters

Informed consent means you understand what a treatment involves, what it can realistically achieve, what the risks are, and what the alternatives would be, before you agree to go ahead.

Before your first clinic treatment you will be asked to read and sign a consent form for that specific treatment. This page is published so you can consider all of it calmly in advance, rather than reading it for the first time in the treatment room.

Your consultation comes first

Every new clinic client has a consultation before any treatment begins, with Dr Nilmini Jayaweera (MBBS Colombo) where the treatment calls for medical assessment.

We assess your skin, take a medical history, explain what we recommend and why, and set out the realistic outcome, the number of sessions likely needed and the total cost. You will have time to ask questions, and you are never under any obligation to proceed.

What we need to know about you

Please tell us about all of the following, even if it seems unrelated. It genuinely changes what is safe for you:

  • Any medication you take, including isotretinoin (Roaccutane) in the past 6 to 12 months
  • Whether you are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding
  • Any allergies, including to anaesthetic creams, latex or fragrance
  • Skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, active acne, or a history of cold sores
  • Any history of keloid or abnormal scarring
  • Recent sun exposure, sunbed use or fake tan
  • Any treatment you have had elsewhere recently, such as peels, laser, microneedling or injectables
  • Medical conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, autoimmune conditions, immune suppression or a history of cancer
  • Any implanted device such as a pacemaker, or metal implants near the treatment area

When a treatment may not be suitable

Sometimes the right answer is to wait, to adjust the plan, or to decline a treatment altogether. If we do that it is because it is genuinely in your interest, and we will always explain why and offer an alternative where one exists.

Common reasons to postpone include pregnancy or breastfeeding, an active skin infection or cold sore in the area, recent isotretinoin use, very recent sun exposure, or a medical condition that is not currently well controlled.

Patch testing

Some treatments, including laser and certain peels, require a patch test before your first session, usually 24 to 48 hours beforehand.

A patch test is a small test area that shows how your skin responds. It is the single most effective way to reduce the risk of a reaction, so please do not ask us to skip it, even when time is short.

Risks, and what is normal

Most reactions are mild, expected and settle quickly. Common and normal after-effects include redness, warmth, mild swelling, tightness and light flaking, typically settling within hours to a few days.

Less commonly, and depending on the treatment, there can be prolonged redness, temporary darkening or lightening of the skin, blistering, crusting, infection or, rarely, scarring. We will go through the risks specific to your treatment at consultation.

Results vary between individuals. A course of sessions is often needed, and no practitioner can guarantee a particular outcome.

Aftercare is part of the treatment

How you care for your skin afterwards affects both your result and your safety, so please follow the instructions you are given.

  • Use a broad-spectrum SPF daily, and avoid direct sun as advised
  • Avoid heat, steam, saunas and strenuous exercise for the period we specify
  • Do not pick, scratch or peel treated skin
  • Use only the products we recommend while your skin recovers
  • Contact us promptly if anything concerns you between sessions

Photographs and your records

We may take before and after photographs to track your progress clinically. These form part of your confidential record and are stored securely.

We will only ever use your photographs publicly, such as on social media or our website, with your separate written permission. You are completely free to say no, and you may withdraw that permission later. Declining has no effect whatsoever on the care you receive.

Clients under 18

Anyone under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, who must consent on their behalf. Some treatments are not offered to under-18s at all, and we will tell you clearly if that applies.

You can change your mind

Consent is not a one-time signature. You may withdraw it at any point, before or during a treatment, without giving a reason and without any awkwardness. If you ask us to stop, we stop.
